Norwich Cathedral 1989 Peace & Scott
Norwich Cathedral 1989 Peace & Scott
David Peace and Sally Scott worked closely together on this design for the door to St Catherine’s Chapel, in the south transept of the Cathedral. The design is based on the text from TS Eliot’s first quartet “Burnt Norton”.
Scott took from the words the imagery of a sunflower with its natural spiral pattern of seeds, leaving the centre of the flower clear as the “still point of the turning world”.
The design spirals outwards with increasing velocity becoming a Catherine wheel, the lettering spins off these centrifugal lines with fragments of the poetry.
The door is one piece of 25mm toughened glass without a frame, curved and polished to fit the stone archway, and hinged into the stone.

See detail below, "Sunflower".
